Summer Letter from Principal Kami Tomberlain

Dear Pioneer Families,

 

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!  We’re hopeful that each of you will have a pleasant summer and come back to school in August ready to learn and play with your fellow Pioneers. 

 

We do have a few administrative changes for the coming year.  Our long-term Assistant Principal, Cathleen Rodriguez, has a new job at the district office and will no longer be with us daily.  Our new Assistant Principal, Yukari Salazar, will be a familiar face to many of you.  She’s been teaching Japanese and leading the World Language department at Cupertino for over ten years.  We are thrilled to have her on our team.  Mrs. Salazar (Gr-L) will be overseeing athletics and activities; Mr. Walczak (A-Go) will take on the role of Scheduling and Guidance Assistant Principal.  Rounding out our team will be Mr. Wright (Sh-Z) and Mrs. Nafrada (M-Se).   Our returning Assistant Principals will continue supporting their alpha groups while Ms. Salazar will take over student support for those formerly seen by Mrs. Rodriguez.  

 

Also new this year are traffic guidelines designed by the city to reduce congestion on Finch Avenue.  Drivers who are dropping off students in the pool parking lot may only turn LEFT on Finch.  Those dropping off students in the bus circle may only turn RIGHT on Finch.  We will continue to have a crossing guard on Finch and also at Stevens Creek.  Please be mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists as you drive near campus.

 

Additionally, we will begin construction this fall on a new classroom building at the back of campus.  The building, set to open in December of 2017, will house 30 classrooms, including 6 science labs and one Robotics lab.  We are excited about this new addition to our campus, though we will be maneuvering around construction fences again for about a year.  Those classes formerly housed in building 600 will be relocated for the next year and a half—as soon as the portables are delivered to campus.  Drama, Academic Communication, and the Visually Impaired program have already moved so that there’s less disruption for those students.  We remain grateful to the community for the bond support that allows us to house our additional students effectively.

 

Summer is a great time to get prepped for the school year in a variety of ways.  I tell the students that to be a true Pioneer, they need to work hard, play hard, be kind and live with integrity.  Summer is perfect for setting goals in those areas, making some “new year’s resolutions,” (mine are always timed with a new school year rather than the turn of the clock in January), acquiring supplies, developing positive habits, and making memories with friends.  We encourage all of our young Pioneers to get involved in school activities as well as academics.  Summer is a great opportunity to research options and make a game plan, whether your student is an incoming 9thgrader or an upperclassman who hasn’t yet found his/her niche.  There are activities to suit every taste, from sports to performing arts, service clubs to interest clubs, competitive groups and groups that just hang out together.   A trip to our website (HTTP://WWW.CHS.FUHSD.ORG/) would be super start—as would a chat with your neighbors about their experiences at Tino.

 

Our academic theme at Cupertino High School is that “all means all.”  We expect all of our students to learn at high levels and will provide the time and support necessary for students to reach those heights.  Students are expected to do their work, ask questions, monitor their learning, and get help when needed. The staff provides a variety of resources for student assistance, from office hours to tutorial to afterschool workshops or labs.  Additionally, there are school-wide support systems in place such as the Student Center for Success and Admin Tutorial.   Parents will be kept updated on student performance largely via our School Loop system.  If you would like to volunteer as a parent tutor to help students reach their goals, please contact Mr. Geoff Wright at GEOFF_WRIGHT@FUHSD.ORG.  Our academic support systems rely heavily on parent volunteers, so if you have time to give and a passion for learning, we have a place for you!

 

I also encourage parents to get involved in other ways at Cupertino High School.  We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) that coordinates a number of events each year and could use your support and assistance.  There is an elected School Site Council.  Booster groups for activities such as sports, performing arts, cheer, dance, and speech always need help as well.  Please find ways to get involved—at the level that suits you.   We value parent help!

 

The school office will be closed for the month of July, opening again on August 1st.  If you need assistance prior to August 1st, please contact our district office at (408)-522-2200.  The receptionist there can direct your call.

 

Have a wonderful summer!  We’ll see you all on August 8th (Seniors & Juniors) or August 9th (All new students, Freshmen, & Sophomores) for Pioneer Days and then again on August 15th for the First Day of School.  Until then, enjoy your PDF (play time, down time, family time).
