A Message from Principal Kami Tomberlain

August 2017

Dear Pioneer families,

Focus for 2017-18:  As always, we focus on high levels of learning for all students. Our classes are engaging and challenging—and we offer further supports for students who struggle.  Additionally, we are focused on student wellness.  We encourage all of our students to take care of themselves by getting sufficient sleep, eating well, and finding opportunities to play and laugh.  Our school mantra is Work Hard, Play Hard, and Be Kind.  In our efforts toward that final aspect of our mantra, this year we will also be focused on ensuring a safe, unbiased environment for all of our students.  We will be training students and staff members to “Speak Up at School” when they hear bullying, name-calling, identity-based stereotypes, or hateful language, either in person or on-line.  Parent education will be included as part of our PTSA meetings, among others. Our plan is to empower each of us with the tools to make Cupertino High School an even safer, more loving community.

Construction:  The new building in the back of campus is coming along nicely and we’re looking forward to occupying it mid-winter.  On the Stevens Creek end of campus, the shop-turned-tot-center is being revamped as a black box theater for our drama program.  The new facilities will include a classroom/performance space, extensive storage, as well as a tech area for building sets.  That new space will open in the fall, perhaps October.  Additionally, classrooms in the 100 building have been re-carpeted and new HVAC units were installed in the 800 wing.

Getting involved:  We welcome parents to get involved at Tino in a variety of ways.  Please sign up for the PTSA’s google group at  Most requests for volunteers come through this venue.  On that note, please join the PTSA (see forms on the front page of this website) and donate money toward our objectives.  PTSA is asking for $150 per family.  Additionally, there are parent groups related to athletics, band, speech and debate, cheer, choir, drama, and a host of other student activities.  We also encourage you to come out for games and performances to support your own children and the life of the school.  If you’d like to serve as a tutor for struggling students, we have many opportunities for that service as well.  E-mail Geoff Wright at to let him know of your interest.  You’re needed here and we hope that you’ll get involved, meet some new friends, and become an active part of the community.  I look forward to working with all of you.

With Pioneer Pride,

Kami Tomberlain
