Pioneers Continue Homecoming Win Streak

Cupertino Pioneers 14   Gunn Titans 6

The Cupertino Pioneers snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating the Gunn Titans 14-6 on Cupertino’s Homecoming night. But it was Gunn that opened the scoring first. On the Titans second possession, starting deep in their own territory, Nozuma Imanaka broke free on a 92-yard touchdown run putting the Titans ahead 6-0. Cupertino finally got on the board late in the second quarter, putting together an impressive ten-play drive. This drive culminated in a 9 yard fade route touchdown by Kyle Avvakumovits on a perfect throw from QB Anthony Pozzetti. Marcos Anton’s extra point put the Pioneers ahead 7-6, which is how the first half ended.

Cupertino received the ball on the second half kickoff. But on the very first offensive play in the second half, a fumble recovered by the Titans gave them the ball on the CHS 36-yard line. But the Pioneer defense stepped up and thwarted the drive gaining the ball back for Cupertino. The game would then become a defensive struggle for most of the rest of the way. In the 4th quarter, Cupertino lost a fumble on a poor exchange between Pozzetti and Schutz. But the Pioneer defense forced a turnover, as Kyle Avvakumovits caused a fumble and recovered it himself near midfield.

Late in the 4th quarter, Cupertino scored again, this time on a 24-yard run by CJ Pumphrey putting the Pioneers up 14-6. Gunn had just over a minute left for a potential game-tying drive. But Morgan Saenz intercepted a pass on the last play of the game sealing the Pioneers victory.

Coach Oswald was pleased with the effort. “I thought our defense played really well. There was one big play by the opposition – which was more of a communication problem than anything else; but otherwise we played well on the defensive side of the ball”. Oswald highlighted the defensive play of several players, including Peter Palomo and Dylan Schutz. Oswald also added, “Michael Munson did a nice job keeping his side of the edge contained, as did Marcus Verkler on the other side.” When asked about the team’s struggle on offense, especially the running game early on, Oswald said, “We got beat up; our offensive line didn’t play well.” But on a positive note offensively, Oswald said of his QB, “Anthony [Pozzetti] had a nice game; he made good decisions most all night.

Cupertino’s next game will be on Saturday October 25 against Los Altos, before returning home for a Halloween night challenge against Fremont.

Pioneers Improve to 3-0

The Cupertino Pioneers moved to 3-0 by defeating the Overfelt Royals by a score of 30-28. The game started out with Cupertino moving the ball with an efficient opening drive down to the Overfelt 23 yard line. But the Royals’ Savea intercepted an Anthony Pozzetti pass to stall the drive. Then, on the very first offensive play by the Royals, Alex Tirado took a pitch out and then passed to a wide open Alex Puentes for a 75 yard touchdown. But the Pioneers came back late in the first quarter. From the Overfelt 39 yard line, Pozzetti rolled out to the left and saw nothing but open space in front of him as he scampered for a touchdown. The Marcos Anton PAT made it 7-6 CHS. On Overfelt’s ensuing drive, Pioneer lineman David Li stripped the ball from the Overfelt runner and recovered the fumble himself, setting up the Pioneers in good field position. But while the ensuing drive proved fruitless, Cupertino did score later in the second quarter. TE Ben Murray took a pass from Pozzetti and rambled down the sideline for an apparent touchdown. But a penalty called on the play forced Cupertino to settle instead for a 35 yard field goal by Marcos Anton. On the next drive, with time winding down in the half, Pozzetti found an open Morgan Saenz, who nimbly evaded would-be tacklers to score a 32 yard TD making the score 17-6 at half.

In the second half, Overfelt started with the ball and marched on an impressive 15-play drive capped off by a 2 yard TD run by Puentes, making the score 17-12, which is the way the 3rd Quarter would end. But on the first play of the 4th Quarter, Pozzetti called his own number on a quarterback keeper scoring a 2 yard TD run of his own putting the Pioneers up 23 to 12. After the defense held Overfelt and forced a punt, CHS scored another touchdown, this time Pozzetti finding Dylan Schutz over the middle for a 15 yard touchdown. With the score 30-12, and less than 6 minutes left in the game, it seemed that the result was a certainty. But largely due to the play of Overfelt senior Alex Puentes, the Royals weren’t finished yet. Puentes scored a 34 yard TD run. Then, after holding the Pioneers to a 3-and-out, Overfelt had the ball again with under two minutes left. But Puentes scored on a 70-yard TD run making the score 30-28. But when CHS recovered the ensuring on-side kick, the Pioneers were able to run the clock out for victory.

Coach Chris Oswald commented on the physical nature of the game afterwards. “Both teams got banged up; we’re happy to emerge with a victory. We had to fight through some injuries, and that made it tough.” The Pioneers suffered injuries to Brenden Cote, David Li, and Marcus Verkler. Their status for next week is uncertain. When asked about keys to victory, Oswald highlighted the play of Edison Hernandez, “Edison ran really hard tonight. If he felt he didn’t run a play as well as he should have, he would run even harder the next time with the ball.” Hernandez had 21 carries for 146 yards, which led the team by a wide margin.

Next week, Cupertino travels to Mountain View High for the league opener.
