A Sparrow's Flight

By Megha Ilango

A jump, a push, the first motivation.
Wings that extend in confidence and aspiration.
Air rushing up as he crashes and falls.
A heap on the ground, a small, twisted ball.

A moment of despair as those small eyes open.
The weight of gravity leaves him broken.
But he’ll stand up, his wounds will mend.
With patience and persistence, he’ll try again.

The next time, he jumps from the nest on his own.
He soars up and away, further than before.
He chirps in joy; he’s tried for so long.
His journey has left him swift and strong.

Rising Sun

by Shivani Sankar

Hues of oranges and yellows,

Blurred together on a canvas,

Mixed with blacks,

And all shades of grey.

I hadn’t painted,

Much myself.

Others scribbled

Before I got a chance.

I wept at my losses,

To never be a perfect picture.

Lost under clouds,

A hope diminished.

Steady hands guided me.

Held me tight,

Showed me light,

That I had long awaited.

Paintbrushes wore thin,

As I glided quickly.

Stroke by stroke,

Covering lines of dark

Hanging over the fireplace today,

A rising sun,

In place of,

A once tragic mess.
